I am excited to be a music specialist working with students at Dessie Evans and connect with families in both Spanish and English!! When I see a student light up because they finally understand the subject matter I get just as excited as they do!! (maybe even more). When time permits, I love to be outdoors mountain biking, rock climbing, frisbee golfing, roller skating, etc."

 Heather Mayfield
Heather Mayfield: "Want to know Heather Mayfield the office manager at the fabulous Dessie Evans? . . .

I started with the PSD in 2011 at Spinning then quickly moved to Brouillet full time.  One really important fact is that I passionately love this job and your students! A long time ago a student called me Ms. Heather and that has stuck ever since and I love it!

I have been married almost 28 years and we have 2 kids who also went through the Puyallup schools. My 26 year old daughter is a nurse and my 24 year old son is a mechanic and married to my most favorite and fabulous daughter in law. Coming home to my 2 westies is a small joy I look forward to everyday since we are empty nesters (which is pretty amazing!).

Pastimes include reading (my family knows not to mess with book club night), gardening, home remodeling, a good movie with lots of popcorn and my small obsession with my Mazda’s which includes my 1999 Miata.

One of my greatest work joys is to read my favorite children’s book, ‘Frog & Toad’ to kindergarten classrooms.  I use this time to chat with them and learn their names which helps with my goal to learn every student’s first name.  That personal connection is super important to me. During an office chat with a student a long time ago, I let him know I would not be at work tomorrow and he said, ‘what do you mean Ms. Heather? Like, this is your job? I thought you lived here’. It is that relational piece with students that make this my dream job!"

 Veronica Melton
Veronica Melton: "Hello.  I am Veronica Melton, the 5/6 Quest teacher at Dessie Evans.  I have been teaching for 20 years and am very passionate about gifted education.   I have a degree in Environmental Science with a focus in geochemistry from University of Kentucky.  I also attended graduate school at Georgia Southern University and received my Specialist in Gifted Ed from Eastern Kentucky University.   My favorite subject to teach is science.  I love seeing students try new things and attempt to engineer to solve problems.  My classroom is full of action and is project based.  Students have a say in what they learn and how to demonstrate their learning to others.  Outside of school I love to cook, travel and watch sports, especially University of Kentucky basketball and professional soccer.  I live in Gig Harbor with my husband and son, who attends PHS.  I also have a pug and a black cat.  I am super excited to be part of the Dessie Evans team!"
 Katherine Snowden
Katherine Snowden: "My name is Katherine Snowden and I will be part of our amazing Dessie Evans family, teaching third grade. I am utterly thrilled to be joining an extraordinary group of professionals working in collaboration with families to build a culture of empowerment, encouragement and personal ownership with the common goal of growth and success, however that looks for each unique individual. I earned my teaching certificate in 1993 from Washington State University and have loved being a learning partner alongside the students with whom I have been blessed to share a classroom. At home I share an urban homestead with my two amazing children who are truly the light of my life, three sweet and silly goats, 13 madcap chickens, and every spring and summer a lot of flowers and vegetable plants; we live, love, and work together to increase our joy and intentionally reduce our carbon footprint every day. I am so excited to begin new learning adventures as we open the doors to a new school and also open the doors to all of the possibilities and opportunities ahead!!"
 Kelli Van Scyoc-Gomez
Kelli Van Scyoc-Gomez: "I will be teaching the third grade at Dessie Evans in the fall. I have a wonderful husband of 15 years, three children, ranging in age from 9 to 13, and three dogs at home. I stay busy decorating, attending my kids various sporting events, running our family restaurant, and crafting for my students. There is something pretty special about getting to be around amazing little  people every single day. There is nothing I would rather do and am so excited to be a part of this new adventure."

 Holly Whitehead
Holly Whitehead: "I am so excited to be teaching first grade at Dessie Evans. I have taught 1st grade for the past 16 years and love spending my days watching little minds grow. There is something really special about watching a child learn to read and find a love of learning new things. I believe that every child is special and can succeed. I think it is important for the students to have a safe, welcoming learning environment that promotes fun, growth, and a sense of family. I cannot wait to meet all of our Dessie Evans students and families!"
 Crystal Widmann
Crystal Widmann: "The fall of 2020 will start my 20th year of teaching in the Puyallup School District. I am looking forward to welcoming all of the 5th graders to Dessie Evans! "I’m so excited to be a part of the Dessie F. Evans Elementary Family! As a 1995 graduate of the Puyallup School District, there’s no better place I’d rather teach or raise my children. After 19+ years teaching, I’ve learned a few things. 1) Family is number one 2) Failure is just a stepping stone to achievement 3) Be adventurous; get outdoors!"
